Shea Butter

Shea butter is an ingredient extracted from the nut of the shea tree that grows naturally in the wild in the dry savannah belt of West Africa. It has been used as a cosmetic ingredient for centuries. The shea butter comes from two oily kernels within the shea tree seed. After the kernel is removed from the seed, it is ground into a powder and boiled in water. The butter then rises to the top of the water and becomes solid at warm temperatures and has an off-white or ivory colour. Its high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids makes it a great product for smoothing, soothing and conditioning the skin.

FAQ

Pores are very small openings on the surface of the skin through which sweat or sebum flows. The thicker an oil, the less penetrating it is, the more comedogenic it is and the more it blocks the pores. Shea butter is a non-comedogenic oil because its index is 0 and therefore does not block the pores.

The heat opens the pores. After a hot shower, shea butter will penetrate more quickly.

Excess sebum can lead to oily skin. Oily skin leads to acne. Acne-prone skin can lead to inflammation. Shea butter is rich in anti-inflammatory properties. It is therefore effective in reducing acne problems. For information, sebum is an oily secretion produced by the sebaceous glands and whose role is to protect the skin. The face is the part where the greatest amount of sebum is generated. The quantity of sebum increases according to different factors: hormones (periods), heat (spring/summer), and bad habits (unhealthy diet).

Because shea butter softens and smoothes the skin, it may reduce the appearance of cellulite. The increase in collagen production caused by shea butter may play a role in cellulite treatment as well since it makes the skin stronger and less likely to sag.
